Essential to the heart of war, but often forgotten: it's time to put the spotlight back on the nurses of the Great War! The Musée de la Grande Guerre in Meaux pays tribute to these "silent heroines" with a major exhibition running from April 8 to December 31, 2023.
When we think of the First World War, we often remember the soldiers, armies and leaders involved in the conflict. But behind these men were women, who also had a front-row seat to suffering and death. These nurses were military or civilian, professional or volunteer, all involved in the survival and care of those struck down by the enemy.
The exhibition at the Musée de la Grande Guerre lifts the veil on these health care warriors: we discover their different missions and fields of action, as well as the status of nurses during the war. A chapter of the exhibition also presents the images and stereotypes associated with them.
More than a hundred years on, these nurses are still largely unknown in history books. Yet they played an essential role, both at the front and among the civilian population. This exhibition pays tribute to their work and skills.
Photographs, statues, historical documents, period medical equipment and French nurses' outfits are on display. These items add a touch of emotion to the exhibition: the museum has been able to identify each woman who wore the outfits on display. For some of them, we can even learn about their lives and stories during the war!
Come and discover these incredible caregivers, in a poignant historical exhibition, at the Musée de la Grande Guerre.
