The Musée de Montmartre in Paris is dedicating an exhibition to one of the most emblematic artists of the 19th century, Théophile-Alexandre Steinlen, from October 13, 2023 to February 11, 2024. Immerse yourselfin the world of a protean and unclassifiable artist, known for his talents as a draughtsman, engraver, painter and sculptor. This exhibition marks the centenary of his death, and invites you to discover his unique commitment to social freedom and justice.
A native of Lausanne, Steinlen settled in Montmartre in 1881, helping to spread a spirit characterized by humor and anti-conformism. By signing the iconic poster La Tournée du Chat Noir, he became a key figure in the bohemian Montmartre of the late 19th century. The exhibition offers a unique insight into his collaborations with the Chat Noir cabaret and its associated revue, testifying to his strong ties with the Butte district.
A spokesman for the people, Steinlen used his pencil to denounce oppressive political and religious powers. His social art is revealed through a variety of techniques, including newspaper drawings, posters, prints, paintings and sculptures. His works, particularly those linked to the People's Revolution and harsh social reality, are a powerful cry against injustice and suffering.
The exhibition at the Musée de Montmartre retraces Steinlen 's career with a selection of some one hundred works. The tour is organized into three main movements: Montmartre and the Chat Noir; the people as subject and goal of art; and the relationship with the classical genres of art history. An opportunity to rediscover one of the district's most emblematic artists... Shall we drop in, friends?
