Colors, natural settings, strangely shaped humans... Admiring a Dana Schutz painting is like plunging into a dream. The American artist is honored at the Musée d'Art Moderne de la Ville de Paris: her work is presented in a new exhibition, on view from October 6, 2023 to February 11, 2024.
Entitled The Visible World, the exhibition offers an overview of Dana Schutz's career. It features some forty paintings, from the 2000s to the present day, as well as numerous drawings and prints, and seven sculptures. These works are a gateway to the artist's zany, dreamlike and colorful universe.
At first glance, Dana Schutz's works may seem chaotic, surreal, even a little frightening. On closer inspection, however, thestory told by the artist gradually takes shape, in the shapes, colors and characters that populate this unusual world. Each painting, sculpture or drawing is a story in its own right.
In her "visible world", Dana Schutz speaks to us of her surroundings, of individual identities as well as large-scale societies, of subjects that never cease to disrupt the world, of the transformation of beings and worlds, of the tensions that pit us against one another... The creator is also fascinated by these recurring motifs: conflicts return time and again, and people stop talking to each other. Myths and gods eventually die, societies disintegrate, rot, then disappear... Before, perhaps, being reborn, with a new purity and strength.
A sharp eye and cynical humor, poetry and brilliant colors: Dana Schutz's work is full of contradictions and paradoxes. It's what makes her work so compelling, what attracts and captivates us. Come and explore this visible world, and enjoy this new exhibition at the Musée d'Art Moderne.
