Manga arrived in France in the early 1980s, and quickly found its audience. In 2023, 39.6 million copies were sold in France, representing more than one comic book title in two, according to GfK, a global market research institute. This figure is down on previous years, but is still high enough to make France the world's second-largest manga country, behind Japan.
Today, manga appeals to young and old alike, and bookstores offer a wide range of titles for all audiences. Those in the know know the difference between a shonen, a shojo, a seinen, a seijin...
If you're unfamiliar with these terms but want to broaden your manga culture, or if you're already an absolute fan of the medium, good news: an exhibition dedicated to manga is being prepared at the Musée Guimet. Nicolas Ruyssen, Director of Communications at the Musée national des arts asiatiques - Guimet, has teased the arrival of this exhibition in 2025.
The @MuseeGuimet will pay tribute to him in 2025 in the "Manga" exhibition currently in preparation.

Nothing is yet known about the exhibition. We do know, however, that the museum will pay tribute to Akira Toriyama, the creator of Dragon Ball who died on March 1, 2024. We can also expect to see several major titles from the world of manga, such as One Piece, Doraemon, Naruto, Attack of the Titans, Bleach... The exhibition could also give us a chronological history of manga, starting with the origins of this very special genre.
We look forward to seeing this exhibition at the Musée Guimet!
