His Scream shocked the world of art and painting: Edvard Munch is one of Norway's most famous painters. The artist and his work have influenced many creators. To pay tribute to him, 80 years after his death, the artists of the Wawi gallery have come up with a special exhibition, accessible free of charge.
A total of 11 street artists are taking part in the exhibition, entitled Catharsis. From January 12 to 28, 2024, Bust The Drip, Kogaone, La Robotte, Levalet, Lapin Mutant, Chabeuh, Sly2, Meln, Sitou Matt, Iota and Agrume unveil their 100% original creations, dedicated to Munch.
The artists have taken inspiration from and reinterpreted the Norwegian painter's most important paintings, in their own modern, contemporary style. In all, some twenty street-art works and a number of monumental frescoes plunge us into Munch's unparalleled world.
A tribute exhibition, a reinterpretation of the classics... So far, so simple for the young artists. However, the game gets more complicated: the Wawi gallery has given them a major challenge: to draw their inspiration from a work by Munch... Without seeing it. Indeed, for this exhibition, the artists were not allowed to see the reference paintings. All they had were key words, phrases to imagine the original painting. Based on these words, and the feelings and emotions they evoked, the artists set to work, entering the world of the Expressionist painter.
An exhibition that promises many surprises, to be discovered in January at Galerie Wawi.
