Mythology, films, books, series, games: stories about the Vikings are numerous, and often spectacular. But it's not always easy to separate fact from fiction. The Musée Archéologique du Val d'Oise is offering us a refresher course on this fascinating people from the North.
The museum presents Viking Heroes, a free exhibition that should enthrall children and parents alike. Past and present collide in a journey that challenges our modern vision of the Vikings, a people closely linked to the history of France, and in particular to Normandy... And to the Val d'Oise!
Awarlike people, destroying everything in their path, barbarians and conquerors, or noble and powerful heroes: depending on the era and the stories propagated, the image of the Vikings can be very different.
Through historical and archaeological research, the Musée du Val d'Oise reveals the great figures of the Viking world, such as Knut the Great, the first emperor of the North Sea, Hastein, a warrior who terrorized the Frankish people in the 9th century, and Thorbjorg Petite Volva, a shaman. The exhibition explains what the hero meant to these Vikings, the criteria for attaining the title, and brings our modern vision of the hero face-to-face.
Power, might, success, bravery, self-transcendence and determination: the heroes of yesterday and today are not the same, and their stories speak volumes about our times.
A thrilling exhibition to discover this year at the Val d'Oise archaeological museum!
