What do our objects say about us? What personality lies behind a jacket or a trinket? To answer this question, you'd have to be a detective... Or a curator. The Musée Delacroix explores the world and intimacy of two great 19th-century artists through their personal objects and paintings.
From March 20 to June 10, 2024, discover Ingres et Delacroix, objets d'artistes, an original exhibition that takes us into the artists' daily lives, to better understand the man behind the brush.
Ingres' violin (the famous one), a Delacroix tobacco pot, an illuminator's inkwell, a painter's palette, decorative objects, travel souvenirs, gifts, working equipment... This exhibition brings together numerous objects that belonged to Ingres and Delacroix. Behind the simplest trinket lies a story, an anecdote that tells of the artist's life, dreams, inspirations and loves. Several paintings complete the tour.
The exhibition thus highlights the links between the intimate, personal lives of the painters and their works. Like a Chinese portrait, this tour offers a new, unusual portrait of the two artists.
Ingres and Delacroix face each other in this exhibition, and not by chance. During their lifetime, the two painters often clashed in art salons, one representing Neoclassicism and the framework of the ancients, the other the passion of Romanticism. The objects on display extend this rivalry: we see the artists' opposing tastes and interests, their different social networks... Although unexpected links can sometimes be found, at the turn of a painting box or a personal object.
If you'd like to find out more about Ingres and Delacroix, there's only one solution: come and visit the new exhibition at the Musée Delacroix in Paris.
