Art lovers are invited to take a trip back in time, to the heart of Venetian artistic effervescence in the 18th century... Head to the Beaux-Arts de Paris to discover theexhibition Tiepolo: Invention and Virtuosity in Venice, from March 22 to June 30, 2024. The exhibition brings together the works of Giambattista Tiepolo, an emblematic figure of Venetian art, and his two sons, Giandomenico and Lorenzo, revealing the richness and diversity of their talent through drawings and etchings.
The exhibition features a remarkable collection belonging to the Beaux-Arts de Paris, the second-largest public collection of Giambattista Tiepolo drawings in France. Unique in its kind, it also includes works by his sons and Giovanni Raggi, Tiepolo 's assistant in the 1730's. For the first time in over 30 years, this collection is brought together, offering the public the opportunity to admire a group of etchings by Giandomenico Tiepolo never before exhibited. Theexhibition highlights the modernity of their art, notably through their ability to explore variations on the same theme, from religious and mythological subjects to caricatures and scenes of Venetian life.
Theexhibition begins with an exploration of studies of heads and faces, questioning their training in theTiepolo studio. It continues with an immersion in the religious paintings and great secular decors of Venice, created not only by the Tiepolos but also by their contemporaries.
Lastly, theexhibition features autonomous graphic works, created outside of any painted project, as graphic exercises or relaxation on iconographic themes repeated almost obsessively. Through these drawings and prints, the exhibition celebrates the exceptional inventiveness of Giambattista and Giandomenico Tiepolo, revealing fascinating facets of their artistic personalities and enriching our understanding of their contribution to the art world.
