The film Back to the Future imagined that 2015 would be populated by flying cars, skateboards that levitate, clothes that automatically adjust to the body... The reality didn't quite live up to our expectations, but that hasn't stopped artists from continuing to dream about what our future might hold.
So, what wonders await us in the coming years? What worlds are being built in the minds of painters, photographers, video artists, visual artists and performers? From April 23 to January 12, 2025, theInstitut du Monde Arabe has invited 18 contemporary artists from the Arab world and its diaspora to explore the many possibilities of this unknown future.
The Arabofuturs exhibition showcases young, forward-looking artists. Whether science-fiction projects or predictions based on the present, these artists invent and create possible futures around a variety of themes. Modernity, ecology, globalization and population migration, plural identities... Today's major topics of discussion could define tomorrow's worlds.
By questioning the future, these artists also call into question today's societies, their abuses, their injustices, their durability. These prophetic works are transformed into mirrors, in which everyone is free to see their qualities and defects, and perhaps redefine themselves.
The artists invited by the IMA have created works that are astonishing, playful, colorful, fascinating or disturbing. Each, through his or her art, transports us into a unique world, optimistic, pessimistic or just different.
Dystopia or radiant future, probable stories or zany dreams, come and discover these Arab Futurists, exhibited at theIMA.
