In the news, in political debates and in everyday discussions, the issue of migration comes up regularly and sometimes provokes very strong reactions. Human migratory flows can be perceived as either a threat or an opportunity. Yet these population movements have always existed. The Musée de l'Homme explores past and future reasons for migration, and the different forms it takes, in a major exhibition on view from November 27, 2024 to June 8, 2025.
The Migrations, a human odyssey exhibition takes us on a moving and fascinating journey through the history of population movements. Photographs, video testimonies, posters or drawings, paintings, digital devices, personal objects: thanks to a variety of works, the Musée de l'Homme aims to deconstruct preconceived ideas and offer new ways of thinking, while discovering how migratory flows have shaped humanity.
The tour addresses questions ofidentity: how migrants see themselves, and how others perceive them. Work, study, ecological disasters or war, new families and cultural preservation: the causes of immigration are many, and so are its effects. Numerous testimonials make this information more real, more touching.
In the final section, the museum reveals the importance of migrations in thehistory of mankind: genetic heritages change and diversify, plants and animals are exported and modify the environment, social practices mix and enrich... All these changes can be seen today in our daily lives, from our food to our vocabulary, not to mention our genetic specificities!
The museum also offers a special booklet for children, to help them put themselves in the shoes of people with multiple destinies. Younger visitors can gain a better understanding of the reasons for leaving, the difficulties encountered along the way, and how a country or culture can be perceived differently by different people.
Without making moral judgments or imposing opinions, the Musée de l'Homme presents the phenomenon of migration, and invites us to continue our reflection, far from political considerations.
