Relive the Liberation of 1944: an immersive exhibition at the Musée de l'Armée

To mark the 80th anniversary of the Normandy landings and the Liberation of France, the Musée de l'Armée is staging a ground-breaking exhibition that plunges us into the heart of this important episode in France's history. The museum presents"Revivez la Libération de 1944 - l'intelligence artificielle au service de l'Histoire", an immersive exhibition to be discovered from November 8 to December 18, 2024.

The exhibition takes us back in time to 1944, and lets us experience - as if we were there - three key moments of this pivotal year. The tour takes the form of an unusual narrative journey, in which visitors rediscover the Normandy and Provence landings and the Liberation of Paris.

To this end, Microsoft's AI for Good Lab, French company Iconem and Mission Libération have taken advantage of new technologies andartificial intelligence to take us back in time - or to bring the past to us.

Numerous period photographs and video archives were used to create a unique experience. On panoramic screens, these old images are colorized in 3D, with perspective effects: the photographs become backdrops into which visitors are immersed.

These reinvented images are interlinked to create a narrative, that of the summer of 1944. Operation Overlord, Operation Dragoon, Liberation of Paris: we see these soldiers, these citizens, these theaters of war come alive and come to life. These three events have been recreated using archive images for the exhibition, making history more real and tangible.

The second part of the tour features testimonials from people who took part in these military operations. Actors tell the personal stories of these war survivors, while old photographs set the scene for the stories they tell. Here, history gives way to more intimate and confidential accounts.

Expect a fairly short visit, but it's well worth the detour in terms of the technologies used and the archival work carried out. Throughout the exhibition, you can choose the testimonies you wish to hear by clicking on the screen, or scroll through the chronology of events and 3D images.
