Who hasn't heard of the pearl, that tiny pearly globe with iridescent reflections that forms in certain shells around the world? For a long time, the pearl necklace was the must-have fashion accessory, and became a veritable symbol of the Roaring Twenties. For its new free exhibition, L'École des Arts Joailliers retraces in the heart of the Hôtel de Mercy-Argenteau, from November 21, 2024 to June 1, 2025, the forgotten story of an incredible artistic, commercial and human adventure, from the origins of the pearl to its use in jewelry, in the capital.
Dive into the world of pearls and their imaginary world, from the Belle Epoque to the present day, and discover their origins and secrets, as well as the golden age of the fine pearl trade between Paris and the Arabian Gulf, its influence on Parisian jewelers and artists, and the reasons for its decline. An opportunity to admire exceptional jewels, in a six-part scenography, but also to experience a sensory side by holding pearls in your hand as you enter the exhibition.
Around a hundred sublime pieces, including necklaces, bracelets and brooches, await you, providing a better understanding of the history of this pearly splendor and"perlomania", in opera as well as cinema, in painting or photography, and its rise in the French capital, a world center during the first half of the 20th century, where fine pearl merchants were once clustered.
As usual, the exhibition is free of charge(booking required), with guided tours for adults and children, as well as workshops on the theme of pearls, for a fee.
