He's one of the most popular directors of recent years... Wes Anderson, the filmmaker behind The Grand Budapest Hotel, The French Dispatch and Moonrise Kingdom, has been given a retrospective at the Cinémathèque française, running from March 19 to July 27, 2025. We were at the press preview, and tell you all about it!

The Grand Budapest Hotel, Fantastic Mr Fox, The French Dispatch, Moonrise Kingdom... He only has a dozen feature films and a few shorts to his credit, but that's enough to propel him to the forefront of the cinematic scene. With his distinctive style, his characters and his storytelling, Wes Anderson has found his audience and made a name for himself in the world of the 7th art.

The Cinémathèque Française has therefore turned its attention to this unusual director, organizing the very first retrospective dedicated to Wes Anderson and his work. The Parisian film museum invites us to discover the unique world of this artist by visiting its exhibition, from March 19 to July 27, 2025.

This exhibition brings together a wealth of film extracts , original props and costumes, and Wes Anderson's personal documents, giving us an insight into the director's creative thinking.

The retrospective offers a pictorial overview of the artist's career, from his beginnings in the 1990s to his latest feature film, via his awards and various works... The exhibition offers an overview of Wes Anderson's universe, a world filled with codes, motifs and personal references, and illustrated by a selection of costumes and sets that identify him at every moment.

An exhibition we were able to preview... And the immersion is straightforward, as the exhibition begins behind a curtain, in a more or less chronological order (only the Netflix shorts are not shown chronologically, here responding to a theme linked to another film). We start with Rushmore, released at the end of the 90s, and continue with all the director's greatest hits.

The common thread running through his films is the archetypal "Andersonian" hero (non-conformist, in conflict with authority, overwhelmed by his emotions), as well as the theme of death, which fascinates Wes Anderson and is very present in his films, and his way of making cinema, with a passion for tableaux vivants, symmetry, graphics, cut-editing, poetic dialogue and the omnipresence of music.

Accessories, costumes, storyboards, notebooks, photos, film extracts... A dive into the artist's vision, dissected with a scalpel, and into his creative process, from classic filming to stop-motion. An exhibition that is sure to delight fans and the curious alike!

The Cinémathèque highlights both Anderson's own aesthetic, and the profound messages hidden in every detail, every work.

Wes Anderson fans, don't miss this exhibition event in spring 2025!
