Nurtured by the aesthetics of El Anatsui and Olga de Amaral, and touched by her encounter with Ambroise Monod, author of the Manifeste du Récup'Art®, Mokap deploys her highly personal creative gesture of recycling in the world of contemporary packaging.
Unwrapping is a gesture repeated dozens of times in our daily lives, a utilitarian and mechanical gesture, often impatient and brutal: pierce, open, rip, tear and finally throw away. Throw away? How can you throw away a Nespresso capsule, that aluminum packaging that's still too beautiful after use? Seeing, grasping and exploiting this potentiality: Mokap launched its creative process in 2005 and found its name, which combines the Mo of its first name and the inspiration born from the metallic material of Nespresso coffee Kapsules.
His dreamlike recycling gesture is then deployed on a range of packaging imposed by today's marketing demons: after aluminium coffee capsules and their cardboard cases, toothpaste tubes, mineral water bottles, inner tubes, magnetic tapes and why not acupuncture needles!
Mokap's careful unpacking of the material reveals all its characteristics and brings them to the fore: the packaging has become unrecognizable in tangles that sublimate it. Metal or cardboard, the hangings are served by an original, mastered weaving technique that lends a sculptural dimension. Colorful mobiles in puffy plastic float freely. The exhibition is punctuated by a number of large-format pieces, demonstrating that the artist is now moving into new dimensions and aiming for larger spaces.
In its own way, Mokap practices absolute distance: packing and unpacking, recycling and overstocking, nesting and unfolding, unpacking and opening on Tuesday December 3 at 6pm.
