Discover the restored Théâtre Impérial at the Château de Fontainebleau and immerse yourself in the history of the Second Empire through a magical and enriching guided tour, putting you in the shoes of the characters of the era.

The Théâtre Impérial de Fontainebleau is a veritable historical treasure, the fruit of a fruitful collaboration between France and the Emirate of Abu Dhabi. Thanks to the patronage of His Highness Sheikh Khalifa bin Zayed Al Nahyan, this theater of Napoleon III and especially ofEugenie, who loved theater more than Napoleon, who was more present to be seen, has been restored and reopened to the public in 2019. Located in the Louis XV wing of the Château de Fontainebleau, it is a UNESCO World Heritage Site.

The Château de Fontainebleau, a royal residence since the 12th century, is one of France's greatest castles and bears witness to the evolution of French architecture over the centuries. The Théâtre Impérial, built under the reign of Napoleon III, is a remarkable example of the neo-Louis XVI style and Empress Eugénie's taste for Queen Marie-Antoinette.

As far as the Théâtre Impérial is concerned, it's important to note that a theater already existed before this one, built by Louis XV in the 18th century in the wing of the château known as the Belle Cheminée. However, it was under the aegis of Napoleon III, in 1854, that it was decided to build a new, more modern auditorium in the western part of the Aile d'Louis XV. This part is on the right when you look at the façade overlooking the Cour d'Honneur, where the château's famous horseshoe-shaped staircase is located. Note that the first theater was destroyed by fire.

The guided tour begins at the top of a staircase leading to the Foyer Impérial, where the Emperor received his guests before the show. Then it's on to the impressive auditorium, with its gilded woodwork and buttercup silk armchairs. This theater, inspired by the Petit Trianon in Versailles, is a technical feat realized by architect Hector Lefuel in 1856.

The theater is divided into four distinct levels, corresponding to the social hierarchy and etiquette of the court. A tour of the different levels reveals the screened dressing rooms reserved for Palace staff, the latrines of the period, the adapted checkrooms, and the Foyer de l'impératrice, covered in Indian blue silk.

We love discovering the history of this sublime place, thanks to the guide's explanations, which put us in the shoes of the ladies in crinolines and gentlemen who came to attend a performance at the theater in the presence of Napoleon and the Empress. How were the premises illuminated, what fire safety system was put in place? Where were people positioned according to their statues, how did the show unfold - these are just some of the questions that are answered on this anecdote-filled tour.

The tour ends downstairs opposite the stage, where we admire the fresco on the theater ceiling and where the guide tells us the story of a marriage proposal. As part of the presentation of the venue, it was decided that no more shows would be staged there. So, from now on, you can only discover it through small group visits.
