The City of Paris has launched an ambitious program to protect the environment and enhance the quality of life of Parisians. By 2020, an additional 30 hectares of green space will be created. Such a major project doesn't happen overnight, but in small steps, the first of which has just been revealed.
The City of Paris has just unveiled a brand-new garden in the 6th arrondissement: the Jardin du Père Armand David. A delight for families and children!
In reality, the Jardin du Père Armand David is not a new garden. It already existed, but has been completely refurbished and redeveloped by Paris City Hall! Tucked away between Rue de Sèvres and Rue du Cherche-Midi, this beautiful, quiet 500 m2 garden has belonged to the Congrégation de la Mission (the Lazarists) since 1817.
In fact, the garden takes its name from the Lazarist missionary Armand David. Sent to China by the Museum of Natural History, he discovered and catalogued thousands of plants and animals, which he then shipped to Paris. His greatest discovery was undoubtedly the identification in 1869 of a species still unknown outside its native region: the giant panda!
A shady garden adorned with trees and medicinal plants, the Jardin du Père Armand David is sure to be a welcome addition to any family outing!
The Mairie de Paris has alsoopened a second garden: the Jardin Truillot, in the 11th arrondissement!
