In Free Guy, Shawn Levy, famous for such films as Night at the Museum, Crazy Night and The Interns, explores the concept of a virtual universe with a touch of originality and humor. The film features an exceptional cast, starring Ryan Reynolds, renowned for his roles in X-Men Origins: Wolverine and Deadpool, and who will be seen again this summer in Deadpool & Wolverine and Pokémon Détective Pikachu. Joining him are Jodie Comer, famous for her role in Killing Eve, Lil Rel Howery, seen in Get Out and Good Boys, Taika Waititi, known for Avengers: Endgame and Jojo Rabbit or more recently Une équipe de rêve , and finally Joe Keery, the inimitable Steve in Stranger Things.
The story revolves around a modest bank clerk who discovers one day that he is only a secondary character in the online video game Free City. Deciding to take his destiny into his own hands, he embarks on a quest to become the hero of his own life. Transformed into a protagonist, he ventures into a world without limits, determined to save it from its imminent demise.
With its captivating plot and impressive cast, Free Guy promises an entertaining viewing experience on Disney+. The film illustrates the universal quest for identity and courage, wrapped up in a tale of humor and adventure. Shawn Levy 's directing talent and Ryan Reynolds ' performance make it a must-see for fans of comedy and inspiring stories.
Our review of Free Guy:
Explosions, adrenalin, dialogues and comic situations: Free Guy is the perfect movie to see with friends or family. Gamers will appreciate this new universe, fairly representative of popular online games, with numerous easter eggs to spot throughout the film. Those who have never touched a controller can rest assured: the story and stakes of this film are easy to understand, even if you're not a seasoned gamer.
But Free Guy also gives us food for thought: are our lives all mapped out? How much freedom do we have? Can we take our destiny into our own hands and create a better future for ourselves and others? With these themes, Free Guy is inevitably reminiscent of the excellent Truman Show, without falling into the trap of copying. In the end, we're left with a happy, funny story, and a desire to explore the world and dare to do those things that everyday life sometimes prevents us from doing.
If you want to (re)discover Free Guy at home, go to Disney+ from April 5, 2024.
