Get ready to immerse yourself in Jonathan Swift's famous novel "Gulliver's Journey", transposed onto the stage of theAthénée Théâtre Louis-Jouvet. The theatrical and musical adaptation of this illustrious work will take place in Paris from December 21, 2023 to January 4, 2024.
Initiated by Valérie Lesort and Christian Hecq, who won a Molière for visual and sound creation in 2022, this staging perfectly captures Jonathan Swift's social satire. Most of the story takes place on the island of Lilliput, with its tiny inhabitants, all embodied by small hybrid puppets. The faces of the actors animating these puppets are very real, giving the performance its lively, human character.
This is not the first time that the Christian Hecq and Valérie Lesort tandem has impressed audiences with its creativity and daring. Their track record includes various stage adaptations of other classics, such as Jules Verne's "20,000 Leagues Under the Sea" at the Comédie-Française, and more recently "Le Bourgeois gentilhomme". Their work on "Gulliver's Travels", with its blend of poetry and satire, perfectly completes this list of stage exploits.
Children and adults alike will be captivated by the story of Gulliver, an 18th-century English surgeon, who finds himself on an island populated by tiny Lilliputians. This adaptation brings out all thefantastic aspects of the original story, without neglecting the social and political criticism it conveys.
The Lilliputians, embodied by hybrid puppet actors (human heads, puppet bodies), accentuate the whimsical aspect of the show. In addition, the use of black theater to create lighting effects enhances the illusion and magic of the staging.
"Gulliver's Journey" promises a grandiose artistic escapade at theAthénée Théâtre Louis-Jouvet: a unique opportunity to travel with the family and in the company of Gulliver from December 21, 2023 to January 4, 2024.
