While social networks have become an integral part of our daily lives, not everything is rosy. Raising a child in the digital age can be a source of anxiety for parents. From the risk of cyber-bullying, to the psychological impact of certain content and the anxiety of idealized lifestyles and physiques, to misinformation and addiction, there are many dangers lurking out there for teenagers, and we can sometimes feel powerless to protect them, despite our best efforts.
In the run-up to Christmas, some parents come to the sometimes dreaded day when their child receives his or her first smartphone. This moment can be imagined as a rite of passage towards a stage of empowerment, and it's difficult to juggle this desire for protection with the desire to respect the teenager's privacy. At a time when the news is regularly punctuated by reports of cyberbullying, and the issue of mental health, particularly among young people, is taking on increasing importance, parents are trying to strike a balance between protecting their children without suffocating them.
With the aim of providing parents with answers to their questions and concerns, the social network Instagram is unveiling an ephemeral space in Paris from November 30 to December 3, 2023, dedicated to the protective tools available online. Located on the forecourt of the Saint-Lazare train station, this"Fam Zone", designed as a Safe Zone, is a joint initiative with various mobilized players, including the Government Information Service (SIG).
For 4 days, families can meet Instagram teams, brand ambassadors and experts from the Génération Numérique and e-Enfance associations to discover some 30 tools and resources available on the platform "to guarantee a positive and serene experience" .Instagram then promises a playful approach to the issue with some animations, a few of which are revealed to us by the platform:
"The Interactive Screen: an intuitive questionnaire offering an original and fun experience while assessing parents' level of mastery of parental control. Participants will be able to answer easily by simply selecting the answer(s) they believe to be true. The aim of this screen is to test their knowledge in a fun way, and enable the whole family to learn more about this crucial subject.
The "Safety Wall": a wall featuring a selection of entertaining video tutorials on the theme of parental control, created byInstagram's Creators. In addition, videos from partners will be shown on the screen to provide an in-depth understanding of online safety.
Partners' area: Every day, representatives of the e-Enfance and Génération Numérique associations will be on hand to answer parents' questions.Government documentation will also be available on site."
