Since its creation in 2011, the Musée de la Grande Guerre has taken part in the annual Heritage Days. For this 40th edition, curious visitors are invited to join us on September 21 and 22, 2024, to learn more about the history of the First World War, thanks to previously unpublished collections carefully preserved by the museum team.
Through a chronological and thematic tour, suitable for children aged 7 and over, the museum helps us to understand how the world was toppled into this Great War, and how this conflict totally changed the face of the world, with its duration and violence of rare intensity.
This museum in the town of Meaux is dedicated to the First World War, with some 70,000 historical objects and interactive displays. This extensive collection is largely the result of research by Jean-Pierre Verney, a historian specializing in the Great War. Photographs, statues, military equipment, paintings, propaganda material, soldiers' uniforms... Through its exhibition spaces, the museum addresses the human, military and technical upheavals engendered by this war, from the viewpoints of different nations.
Accompanied by a member of the museum's conservation team, gain access to spaces usually closed to the public - the museum's reserves. Discover how items that are not on display are conserved, and learn more about conservation techniques.
A guided tour of the different modes of transport used during the Great War, with a focus on the wagons on display in the museum grounds.
Take a sneak preview of the construction site for the museum's future educational trench, due to open in November 2024. Guided by the museum's director, learn more about the various stages of construction on this project.
A guided tour focusing on the different types of communications networks during the Great War: cable networks, radio, pigeon racing, trench systems... everything that defines a war of position.
And if you're a history buff, make the most of the JEP to discover other testimonies to the past hidden in Seine-et-Marne.
