Some of the world's greatest authors, parliamentarians, diplomats and academics have lived here: Diderot, Marshal Lyautey, Madame de Sévigné, His Majesty King Mohamed V of Morocco, Count Wladimir d'Ormesson, Ambassador to the Holy See... Five centuries of history are still visible within the walls of this building.

The 2024 Heritage Days program at Château d'Ormesson in Val-de-Marne, France

  • Guided tours of Château d'Ormesson
    September 21 and 22

Château d'Ormesson, a historic estate that has been in the same family since 1630, is gradually opening its doors to the public, notably on Heritage Days and by appointment the rest of the year.
Guided tours around the park's ponds and in the château's main reception rooms (where the furniture has remained intact for over a century) enable visitors to discover this mecca of literary tradition, which today holds the largest private archive in France.
Attributed to Baptiste Androuet du Cerceau, the château was built in 1581 for Louis Picot de Santeny, Intendant of Finances for Henri III. The château was enlarged when Louis XV decided to make the land of Amboile-Ormesson a Marquisat in 1758.
Illustrious guests have honored it with their visits, including Bossuet, Madame de Sévigné, Diderot, the King of Wurtemberg, Queen Amélie of Portugal, King Mohamed V of Morocco, Princess Bibesco and Pope John XXIII.
Olivier III d'Ormesson, Judge-Rapporteur at Fouquet's trial, Marshal Lyautey and, most recently, Count Wladimir d'Ormesson, French Ambassador to the Holy See... the greatest authors, parliamentarians, diplomats and academics have lived here.
The park was designed by Le Nôtre around a French-style perspective. A golf course was added in 1925.
In all, more than 140 hectares of greenery at the gateway to Paris.

  • Lyautey in Ormesson
    September 21 and 22

Marshal Lyautey, of whom Wladimir d'Ormesson was Ordinary Officer in Morocco in 1916, frequently stayed in Ormesson towards the end of his life: he wrote his acceptance speech for the Académie Française in 1920 and supervised the restoration of the park.
For the first time, in partnership with the Fondation Lyautey, Maréchal Lyautey's bedroom will be open to visitors, accompanied by a historical commentary.
The same ticket will give access to the château's recently restored chapel.
