The European Heritage Days are an annual event held every third weekend in September, enabling the general public to discover Europe's rich historical, architectural and cultural heritage. Initiated in 1984, these days are now celebrated in some 50 European countries. They offer a unique opportunity to visit sites usually closed to the public, attend conferences and take part in guided tours and other events.
In Paris, the European Heritage Days are a not-to-be-missed event for history and culture lovers. The capital opens the doors of many prestigious monuments, such as the Élysée Palace, the National Assembly and the Senate, giving visitors a behind-the-scenes look at these institutions. Museums, private mansions and other emblematic sites offer guided tours, exhibitions and workshops for young and old alike. It's also an opportunity to showcase lesser-known places, hidden treasures of the city, and to highlight the work of craftsmen and heritage professionals.
The archaeology department of the Val-de-Marne departmental council plays an essential role in preserving and promoting the local archaeological heritage. The department carries out excavations, studies and research to uncover and protect the department's historical remains. It also organizes educational activities and exhibitions to raise public awareness of the importance of archaeology and heritage.
Come and take a look behind the scenes of the department, observe remains recently uncovered as part of preventive archaeology operations, discover sites revealed in 3D and even dig and play, to put yourself in the shoes of an archaeologist or archaeozoologist! Conservation and restoration will also be in the spotlight, with a presentation of what a "collection worksite" entails
