On Saturday 21st and Sunday 22nd, culture invades Paris and the Île-de-France region during the annual Journées du patrimoine. For archaeology enthusiasts, visit the Val-de-Marne departmental council!

The European Heritage Days are an annual event held every third weekend in September, enabling the general public to discover Europe's rich historical, architectural and cultural heritage. Initiated in 1984, these days are now celebrated in some 50 European countries. They offer a unique opportunity to visit sites usually closed to the public, attend conferences and take part in guided tours and other events.

In Paris, the European Heritage Days are a not-to-be-missed event for history and culture lovers. The capital opens the doors of many prestigious monuments, such as the Élysée Palace, the National Assembly and the Senate, giving visitors a behind-the-scenes look at these institutions. Museums, private mansions and other emblematic sites offer guided tours, exhibitions and workshops for young and old alike. It's also an opportunity to showcase lesser-known places, hidden treasures of the city, and to highlight the work of craftsmen and heritage professionals.

The archaeology department of the Val-de-Marne departmental council plays an essential role in preserving and promoting the local archaeological heritage. The department carries out excavations, studies and research to uncover and protect the department's historical remains. It also organizes educational activities and exhibitions to raise public awareness of the importance of archaeology and heritage.

The Val-de-Marne Departmental Council's archaeological service is hosting the 2024 Heritage Days program:

    Visit and exhibition
"Le dessous du Rail" (The underside of the railways), when development reveals our history
Virtual visits to the Saint-Maur-des-Fossés abbey in the light of the latest discoveries, and to an air-raid shelter from the last war.
