Art lovers are well acquainted with this not-to-be-missed address in Paris:Hôtel des ventes Drouot, located in the 9th arrondissement of Paris, is a bustling and teeming marketplace forFrench and international art. Paintings, sculptures, objets d'art, antiques, furniture, period documents: collectors and cultural institutions from all over the world come here to unearth treasures all year round.

It's a place of dreams for the curious: what if we told you that you could visit the auction house for free? Drouot will be taking part in the 41st Heritage Days on September 21 and 22, 2024. To mark the occasion, the institution is opening its doors to the general public and offering a range of activities over the weekend.

Does this offer sound too good to be true? Don't worry: the Journées du Patrimoine are real, and always bring their share of discoveries and surprises. This annual event allows us to learn more about the monuments, historic sites and curiosities that surround us, by organizing a weekend-long open house in September.

    We invite you to take a behind-the-scenes look at Hôtel Drouot, a unique institution in the world. Morning and night, this temple of the auction house is in perpetual motion, the scene of a ballet of handlers orchestrated by the auctioneers and their teams. From the delivery dock to the corridors, from the freight elevators - which were the first hydraulic elevators in Paris! - to the Magasinage warehouses, vast spaces are dedicated to the passage of works in a continuous and methodical cadence. Visitors will have the opportunity to gain an insight into the daily mechanics of the institution, and understand the complex logistics involved in selling some 300,000 works of art and objets d'art every year. A detour through the archives will also allow them to immerse themselves in the rich and fascinating history of this emblematic venue, open since 1852.
    At Hôtel Drouot, the show is everywhere!

    An active workshop since the late 1940s, Jean-Thierry Bondt worked for numerous jewelers such as Lacloche, Sterlé, Van Cleef & Arpels, Cartier and above all Boucheron, the latter being his major and preferred customer.     On the occasion of the Journées du Patrimoine, Hôtel Drouot invites you to discover the art of collecting, in connection with three groups of works that will go under the auction hammer a few days later:
    - The Bismuth-Etcheverry Collection, offered by the Millon auction house, offers a captivating panorama of twentieth-century artistic creation. It reflects the taste and history of a couple of collectors who were regulars at auction rooms, where they acquired some of the greatest signatures of their era.
    - You will then explore An unpublished collection, recently discovered in the Paris apartment of an anonymous art lover. Presented by the Daguerre auction house, this corpus of graphic works and photographs conceals some fascinating and unexpected finds.
    - You will also be transported to the heart of the collections of a grand residence, the Château de Nernier, which span the ages with a constant interest in bibliophily, fine furnishings and objets d'art. A rare opportunity to delve into the history and soul of these collections, which bear witness to passions handed down through the generations.

    The hitherto unknown collection of 20,000 drawings and 800 paintings being auctioned by Maison de ventes Daguerre also contains a body of photographs, spanning the history of the discipline from its origins to the 1950s/1960s in 300 prints. This is an opportunity for Serge Plantureux, an expert in the field, to look back at the major trends and some of the very big names, including Nadar, Baldus, Steichen, Man Ray, Kertész, Krull... who have left their mark on photography, and to decipher the techniques at work and the criteria for valuing this art of the multiple.
