Attention architecture lovers... For the 41st edition of the Journées du Patrimoine, theSaint-Vincent-De-Paul church welcomes the curious and lovers of art and history for tours on Sunday, September 22, 2024. Built between 1824 and 1844 for a rapidly expanding neighborhood by Jacques Ignace Hittorff, thechurch bears the name of a 17th-century figure of spiritual and apostolic renewal.
With its dominant antique, Greek and Roman forms and Byzantine-style interior, the church is famous for its long frieze of Christian saints painted by Hyppolyte Flandrin in the nave, and for its large Christ in Majesty by François Édouard Picot on the choir vault. A fine work to be admired on this occasion.
For the Journées du Patrimoine, you're invited to visit the church on your own, or take part in guided tours on Sunday afternoons. Note that the galleries are exceptionally accessible for the occasion, to contemplate the friezes byHyppolyte Flandrin. You can also access the terrace to admire the Paris skyline. An opportunity to take some great photos of the city. Shall we go, friends?
Come and discover the four renovated paintings by William Bouguereau in the Chapelle de la Vierge. In addition, the grandstands will be exceptionally open to admire Flandrin's wax paintings, and the terrace will offer an exceptional view of Paris.
William Bouguereau's paintings have been restored to their former glory!
William Bouguereau's badly damaged Adoration of the Shepherds and The Visitation murals were restored from January to June 2023, in the Chapelle de la Vierge in the Église Saint-Vincent-de-Paul (10th arrondissement). This year, the Adoration of the Magi and The Flight into Egypt were also restored.
A major figure in the Paris art world in the second half of the 19th century, William Bouguereau was known throughout Europe and as far afield as the United States. The decoration of Saint-Vincent-de-Paul represents the religious side of his art, where his talent for the figure finds its most dramatic expression, in the service of large-scale compositions.
Discover its history and restoration processes during a visit led by a curator from the City of Paris.
