As with every self-respecting month of September , this year's Journéesdu Patrimoine (Heritage Days) take place from September 20 to 21: and, as usual, it's an unmissable opportunity to discover places that are open only once a year (during these Days). Ministries, churches, castles, museums, national monuments... The list is non-exhaustive and suitable for all publics, including families. If Paris is THE French destination for the Journées du Patrimoine, the rest of the Île-de-France region also offers some very fine visits, with a different but equally rich and historic heritage.
In the department of Seine-Saint-Denis, in Pantin, just above the 19th arrondissement, along the Canal de l'Ourcq, numerous tours are on offer for the 42nd European Heritage Days. The city is renowned for its cultural spaces, including the Conversatoire Jacques Highelin, the Magasins Généraux and the Conservatoire National de la Danse... So, for these Journées du Patrimoine 2025, set off to discover the city of Pantin, whether you know it or not, to find out all about its history!

Le Château d'Eau de Pantin
Panorama des châteaux d'eau de Seine-Saint-Denis is a project that invites you to (re)discover the history of the département through its water towers, from your phone, computer or tablet.
Designed for all audiences, this fun tour is based on intergenerational conversations, photographs, postcards, videos and quizzes. It enables Sequano-Dionysians to take a fresh look at their territory, exploring its past and its evolution through these monuments as emblematic as they are little-known.
In their own way, water towers tell the story of Seine-Saint-Denis: memories of the past, present-day issues and architectural witnesses to the territory's evolution.

Mehul Outdoor School
Initially intended for pre-tuberculosis youngsters, after the First World War open-air schools were opened to children with physical and sometimes mental disabilities living in underprivileged neighborhoods. Pedagogues, doctors and architects joined forces to design a specific setting combining education and care. The site was chosen with care: it had to be accessible from the city center, far from factories, elevated and well ventilated.
The Pantin outdoor school was designed by municipal architect Florent Nanquette and built in 1932-1933. The former Parc de la Seigneurie, on the Romainville plateau, was recognized at the time as being sufficiently well exposed to accommodate "pulmonary patients" and "infant rearing". The facility built by Nanquette replaced a temporary open-air school that had existed on the site since 1923, and could accommodate 320 pupils.
Now a nursery school, it was listed as a historic monument in 1997. It is one of only two examples of this type of open-air school still standing in the Ile-de-France region, along with the one in Suresnes.
Come and discover the architecture and pedagogy of open-air schools through a guided tour led by a member of the city's Memory and Heritage Department. We propose to accompany you on this tour following the visit to the Ideal School exhibition on Saturday. Alternatively, you can choose to visit the open-air school on your own.

The General Stores
Through a guided tour led by a Magasins Généraux mediator, explore "The Ideal School", an exhibition that reinvents the elementary school, whose architectural and pedagogical model has changed little in over a century. By exploring the innovative alternatives offered by architects, artists and designers, the exhibition invites visitors to reconsider educational and school concepts that are deeply rooted in the collective imagination.
Designed for young and old alike, this tour encourages visitors to observe, question and collectively imagine a different relationship to learning, space and the school community. The exhibition is a sensitive, immersive experience: a space where we explore, from a child's point of view, what a school, both dreamed of and desirable, could be.
"Honoring the Magasins Généraux!
Built in the early 1930s, the Magasins Généraux left their mark on Pantin's industrial activity for over four decades. Abandoned and disused at the end of the 90s, the site was taken over by graffiti artists from all over the world, and dubbed the "cathedral of graffiti".
Anchored on the banks of the Canal de l'Ourcq, the buildings are strong markers of the Pantinois landscape. They bear witness to the constructive, economic, urban and cultural history of the Paris region.
In rehabilitating them, Frédéric Jung's architecture team has endeavored to preserve the original lines and volumes, while giving them new functionalities. In 2016, advertising agency BETC publicly inaugurated the new Magasins Généraux. This marked the beginning of a new life for the Magasins Généraux, which became both BETC's collective workplace and a new cultural venue for new voices in the heart of Greater Paris.
The Magasins Généraux and the city of Pantin join forces to help you (re)discover this majestic, emblematic site. Patrick Bezzolato, guide, architect and photographer, invites you to discover the history and architecture of this Pantin lighthouse along the canal.
