The Journées du Patrimoine will be back on September 21 and 22, 2024, to the delight of history and culture lovers! It's a unique opportunity for thousands of visitors each year to discover or rediscover the hidden treasures of France's heritage. During this special weekend, monuments, museums and other buildings open their doors, often free of charge, for guided tours, workshops or even shows.
Nestled in the Yvelines, Marly-le-Roi is a pearl of history that deserves to be discovered. Known for its château, which has now disappeared but whose majestic remains remain, the town was a favorite haunt of Louis XIV. He built a sumptuous palace here, a rival to Versailles, surrounded by magnificent gardens designed by the famous landscape architect André Le Nôtre. Marly-le-Roi is also a town of artists and writers, where the winds of creation and the melodies of past centuries blow.
A real invitation to travel back in time, not to be missed! Between the poetic ruins of the château, the majestic fountains, and the charming alleyways of old Marly, the town promises an experience rich in emotion. What's more, special events will be organized for these Heritage Days, combining historical discovery and entertainment. The perfect opportunity for a cultural getaway at the heart of French history!
At the Musée du Domaine Royal de Marly
The exhibition "The King's Horses".
Les Chevaux de Marly, masterpieces of equestrian art introduces visitors to the architecture and itineraries designed for horses at the Domaine royal de Marly. The guided tour of the exhibition is punctuated by mime and observation games for younger visitors. It helps visitors understand the importance of the presence and representation of the horse in art from Louis XIV to the Revolution.
After a short introduction to the model of the Domaine Royal in the museum, you're off to explore the park. Along the way, sculpture, fauna, flora and archaeology reveal the park's rich and eclectic heritage.
During the temporary exhibition Les chevaux du roi, visitors are invited to imagine the 4th pediment of the Pavillon royal that painter Charles Le Brun would have designed for King Louis XIV. The drawings submitted by visitors will be on display at the museum over the two days.
Our teams of mediators are on hand to present the museum's permanent collections and the temporary exhibition The King's Horses. Les Chevaux de Marly, masterpieces of equestrian art. Paintings, sculptures, circulation plans and drawings of buildings specially dedicated to horses provide a better understanding of the importance and role of horses in the Royal Estate of Marly. A recommended itinerary guides visitors through the park following the exhibition, in keeping with the theme of this 41st edition of the JEP: the heritage of itineraries, networks and connections.
Cavalcades, the thunder of galloping horses, the sound of saddles... Whether an animal of war or an animal of parade, the horse is very present in 18th-century representations. Whether in the glitter of equestrian entertainments and parades or in the fury of war, composers let us hear the sounds of horses in music. In the company of the donkey, the wolf or the stag, the horse also occupies a special place in the fables we know so well. With this program, we are invited to rediscover them in music!
During this concert, four musicians from the lyric company Les Epopées will help us rediscover this equestrian music.
