After the Paris 2024 Olympic and Paralympic Games, it' s time for the Heritage Days! Introduced in France in 1986 by the Ministry of Culture, these days are an opportunity to visit and discover places in Paris that are sometimes closed to the public!
The Villa Vassilieff, located in the 15th arrondissement of Paris, is a cultural venue founded by Russian artist Marie Vassilieff in 1911, which has served as a studio and meeting place for many famous artists such as Picasso and Modigliani. Today, the Villa is an exhibition and contemporary creation space, managed by Bétonsalon, Centre d'art et de recherche, which hosts exhibitions, artist residencies and cultural events, while preserving Montparnasse's artistic heritage. This year, it welcomes the AWARE association for the Journées du Patrimoine 2024.
AWARE (Archives of Women Artists, Research and Exhibitions) is an organization dedicated to the valorization of women artists in art history. Founded in 2014, AWARE is dedicated to researching, documenting, and promoting the work of women artists, who are often under-represented. This year, the association is creating an event for the 2024 Heritage Days by bringing together four artists at the Villa Vassilieff in Paris.
On the occasion of its 10th anniversary, AWARE is inviting four artists - Fallon Mayanja, Boryana Petkova, Morgane Baffier and Cheryl Ann Bolden - engaged in performative practices to dialogue with AWARE's missions and its research center at Villa Vassilieff.
The day of September 20 will be dedicated to welcoming high school classes for workshops designed and led by artists Morgane Baffier and Cheryl Ann Bolden.
On Saturday September 21, AWARE opens its doors to visitors with a program of performances and interventions by artists Boryana Petkova and Fallon Mayanja.
The AWARE team will be on hand on Saturday September 21 from 11am to 6pm and on Sunday September 22 from 2pm to 6pm to present the association's missions and the history of the Villa Vassilieff. This emblematic site in the Montparnasse district was chosen by artist Marie Vassilieff to set up her studio and found her academy at the turn of the 1910s. This highly symbolic space has been redesigned by designer matali crasset for AWARE, and houses our research, documentation and mediation center entirely dedicated to women artists and gender studies.
