Why do marine animals come to hole up in the Seine for a few months? Are they attracted by something, are they lacking food? Scientists will try to answer this question thanks to the autopsies of the killer whale and the beluga whale, which unfortunately died because of their poor health. If the orca seemed to have a skin disease, the beluga refused to eat. Despite a rescue attempt, the cetacean died in early August. And now a new animal has just been spotted in the Seine, a seal this time!
A passer-by reported it this Tuesday in the Seine, in the department of Eure, at the level of Poses-Amfreville. According to France 3 Normandie, the animal is indeed a calf seal, rather young, spotted but not yet found. The river brigade of Rouen is on the case, and passers-by and boats are invited to be careful. The Eure prefecture indicates that"acolony of seals has been established for several years on the Seine estuary". Seeing one of these animals go up the Seine is rare but it has happened before, so the French Office of Biodiversity believes that the seal should return to the estuary by itself.
Sea Shepherd France therefore recommends that for the time being it should be left alone and its movements monitored, without intervening.
Seal in the Seine: This seal is used to feeding at this time of the year at the exit of the Eure into the Seine. If it is healthy and feeding, we recommend leaving it alone while remaining attentive to its movements.
