Incredible but true, harmful crawfishes have been invading the paths and surroundings of the Bois de Boulogne for a few years, and now threaten the fauna and flora of the Parisian ponds.

What very special news in the very heart of Paris, and yet, crawfishes have been proliferating in the Bois de Boulogne and invade the paths of the Parisian park. And these are not French crawfishes, but pests imported from the United States, and especially Louisiana, much bigger than the French ones. The problem is they jeopardize the ecosystems in ponds and even the Seine riverbanks.

If you happen to stroll by the Bois de Boulogne you may have seen one of those crawfishes. Out of the 7 species reported in France, the two involved here are the American crawfish and the Louisiana crawfish, multiplying since the beginning of the century. The former comes from the East coast of North America and is listed as a “species likely to cause biological imbalances”. But its cousin coming from Louisiana is even bigger and is actually a danger for the fauna and flora for it has no predator.

Although they usually are found in ponds, they move all around and on the banks of the Parisian river. The Maison de la Pêche already sounded the alarm in 2013, telling Le Parisien daily they can dig two-meter holes, like coypus, which jeopardize the banks. To help curbing their proliferation, it is recommended to fish them out and eat them as they destroy everything on their way, animals like nature.
