Noone enjoys when the lifts of the Abbesses metro station – on the line 12 – are out of service. Set 36 meters (118.11 feet) below the Butte Montmartre, this station is the deepest one in the Ile-de-France metro station with tiring 176-step spiral staircase. But this historic record will be broken soon with the technical exploits completed by the Grand Paris Express and metro line 15, this incredible metro line that will go around Paris from the outside.
In Val-de-Marne, the Saint-Maur-Créteil station will be set 52 meters (170 feet) down! The Société du Grand Paris says even the inner walls of the station will be casted 70 meters (229 feet) down. These new automatic wagons will be the first to ride this deeply in the maze of the Ile-de-France network tunnels. To get your metro, you will have to pray all 11 lifts are working properly, or you will enjoy a nice little work out with the monumental staircase that will be built.
Yet, Abbesses will keep its status for a few more years, as the aforementioned station is expected for 2025 only. The project is only completing the digging part and the completion of the underground levels. For the record, the line 15 will cover 75 kilometers and serve 36 stations, linking three outer Paris departments without traveling across Paris.
