With the appearance of the Eris variant of Covid-19, concern is growing in France. For the time being, measures have not been reinforced, but with the arrival of autumn, should we reconsider wearing a mask? Here's a roundup of specialist opinions.

The Eris variant of Covid 19, derived from the XBB.1.5 branch, has so far shown no signs of particular severity. This, at least, is what Brigitte Autran, President of the Comité de veille et d'anticipation des risques sanitaires (Covars), said, adding that initial scientific data suggest that this variant would be sensitive to the new vaccines scheduled for autumn. However, Brigitte Autran, Covars President, does not rule out the possibility of the mask being used again in the event of an "intensive" epidemic resurgence.

So, what actions are underway?

  • Variant surveillance : Another variant, BA.2.86, is being closely monitored by the WHO. It has been detected in Denmark, Israel and the United States, but not yet in France.
  • Vaccination campaign : Three vaccines will soon be available to counter this variant. These vaccines, offered to at-risk populations, include :
    • Two messenger RNA vaccines from Pfizer and Moderna.
    • A recombinant particle vaccine developed by Novavax.
  • Surveillance system : Although currently close to that of influenza, the system will be adjusted this autumn to anticipate any amplification of risk.

The question of masks is back in the spotlight. Aurélien Rousseau, the French Minister of Health, does not rule out making it compulsory to wear a mask, particularly in specific circumstances. He calls for the mask to become "commonplace", especially when in contact with vulnerable people.

Where should the mask be worn?

Édouard Obadia, a resuscitation physician, recommends that masks be worn in sensitive areas such as :

  • Hospitals,
  • crowded transport systems,
  • major events and shows.

Pierre Tattevin, an infectious diseases specialist interviewed on BFMTV, sees no urgent need to wear it everywhere for the time being. But he admits that certain regions may require this precaution.

In conclusion, the situation, although under surveillance, is not yet alarming. But with the arrival of autumn, vigilance is called for. Let's stay alert and informed.
