The hunter's full moon will be visible from Wednesday October 16, 2024, and will remain round for around three days, until Friday October 18. Its peak intensity will be reached on Thursday, October 17, at 11:26 a.m. It will be the biggest and brightest supermoon of the year. After the partial eclipse, the aurora borealis and the Comet of the Century, this is another not-to-be-missed date in the night sky. At that moment, the moon will be 357,364 kilometers from Earth, according to data from the Meteovista meteorological platform.
The hunter's full moon is the moon that immediately follows the full harvest moon, traditionally associated with the harvest. The name, which has its origins in Native American tribal practices and European customs, refers to the intense moonlight that helped hunters stalk migratory game in autumn. This mid-October moon marked the beginning of the preparation of provisions for winter. Depending on tradition, it's also known as the "migration moon" or the "leaf-fall moon", marking the end of the harvest season and the beginning of the cold autumn nights.
A supermoon occurs when the moon is at perigee, the point in its orbit closest to the Earth. During this period, the moon appears around 7% larger and 14% brighter than a typical full moon. The October supermoon is particularly noteworthy, being the most spectacular of 2024. This is the second supermoon of the year, the first having taken place in September. However, this month's event is billed as more impressive than September's.
The hunter's moon will be visible at its best angle from sunset, especially on Wednesday October 16. To fully appreciate its size and color, we recommend viewing it when the moon is close to the horizon. At that moment, it will take on an orange or reddish hue, due to atmospheric refraction. The weather forecast for the week is unstable, although there will be sunny spells despite cloudy spells. That said, as we have 3 days to see it, we should be able to enjoy it.
If you miss this October supermoon, the next full moon, called the Beaver Moon, will take place on November 15, 2024, followed by the last full moon of the year, the Cold Moon, on December 15, 2024.
