The cathedral of Notre-Dame de Paris is about to reopen its doors, five years after the terrible fire. Worshippers and visitors from all over the world will be able to admire the magnificent renovations carried out by craftsmen, as well as works of art including liturgical furniture designed especially for the occasion, exceptional paintings and tapestries. Seven new original tapestries have been commissioned from the Manufactures Nationales to adorn the building's chapels within the next few months.
Weaving is due to start in 2025, but in the meantime, Notre-Dame Cathedral in Paris will be sporting tapestries by some of the 20th century's greatest painters for its reopening. Entrusted to contemporary artists Miquel Barceló and Michael Armitage, the tapestries will combine sacred art with the excellence of the national manufactures of Gobelins and Beauvais, as well as a private workshop in Aubusson.
All we have to do now is wait and see how this collaboration between the Mobilier National, the Archbishopric of Paris, the Rector-Archpriest of Notre-Dame and the Revoir Notre-Dame de Paris association, as well as these two artists - Spanish and Kenyan - will bring this historic monument back to life.
