Tonight, if you're strolling along theÎle de la Cité or Montmartre, or have a view of one of Paris' iconicreligious buildings, you may be surprised to see them glowing scarlet in the dead of night. This Wednesday evening , November 20, 2024, the Notre-Dame de Paris Cathedral in the heart of the capital and the Basilique du Sacré-Cœur perched atop the famous Montmartre hill will both be illuminated in red as soon as dusk falls.
These exceptional illuminations take place as part of"Red Week", an event taking place this year from November 17 to 22, 2024, organized by the association Aide à l'Église en Détresse(AED) with the aim of alerting the general public to the plight of the Christian population persecuted for their faith. For the occasion, hundreds of religious buildings around the world joined the movement by displaying the same lighting, and prayer vigils were organized. The symbolic scarlet color evokes the blood of martyrs, and theAED expresses its desire to "make visible the persecution of Christians".
