After 4DX, multi-projection... Pathé La Villette and Beaugrenelle cinemas are offering a new way to experience cinema with Screen X, from July 18, 2018. What is Screen X? It's a new technology offering viewers " an even more intense and immersive experience with 270-degree projection, for a gripping journey to the heart of the film ".
The principle? Two projectors are placed on either side of the room, broadcasting an extended image of the film onto the two side walls, beyond the screen, with the aim of " prolonging the film experience and substantially increasing the spectator's immersion ". On the other hand, the image on the main screen is the same as for a conventional projection, so there's no loss of images when Screen X is projected: only extensions (digital or live-action) are projected onto the side walls.
And for thrill-seekers, Pathé Beaugrenelle combines its Screen X projections with 4DX, so you can feel the action as well as grasp it visually. In terms of films, the first to be shown in cinemas is Ant-Man and The Wasp. It is followed in August by Jon Turtletaub's feature film En Eaux Troubles, then Corin Hardy's The Nun in September and Aquaman in December. A device also compatible with 3D, but not yet exploited. It should be noted that not all the film is in Screen X, for reasons of viewer comfort.
Our verdict? The experience itself is interesting, and the short projections proposed and worked around this system of diffusion change completely the perception that we have of the cinema, notably on the wide shots which are really pleasant to look at and really immersive.
Beware, however, that people suffering from motion sickness may be bothered by certain projections, when these are made with full Screen X support. There are also a few problems with tight shots, which can make certain scenes more confusing than a conventional projection. Last but not least, the borders of the main screen break immersion somewhat. But the result is nonetheless enthusiastic and will delight technology and cinema enthusiasts.
