Produced by British Ruper Goold (True Story, The Hollow Crown), the biographic movie is based on the musical End of the Rainbow by Peter Quilter. We discover Judy Garland in the late 60’s, in London where she has to perform a series of concerts while being worn out.
Also starring with Renée Zellweger, we have Rufus Sewell as Sidney Luft, Michael Gambon as Bernard Delfont and even Finn Wittrock as Mickey Deans.
"Judy" is said to be out on February 26, 2020 in French movies.
Right in the swinging London (1968) star Judy Garland performs a series of concerts in London. Worn out by her lifestyle, her addictions and her failed love stories, she will yet give in to passion once last time with disc producer Mickey Deans…
Plot:
Judy is a moving movie about the descent into hell of an actress who's been stolen her teen years by Hollywood, about her fight to get back on her feet and her love for stage and audience that will move her to the end. A movie that takes us between two eras, the one of the concert of the last chance in London in opposition to her teen years on the set of the Wizard of Oz and the obsession of the production to keep her mystified image spotless.
Two eras that answer to one another in an interesting way, despite rather flat flashback and not alway useful (or at least that long) to the story. But it doesn't prevent the biopic to be terribly effective (as for the London parts) and solid in the story it tells.
A movie supported by a Renee Zellweger at the top of her art, unrecognizable for her role as Judy Garland but who tends to do like Bryan Singer for Bohemian Rhapsody : choosing to show only one side of the artist's life to cast a shadow on everything that make the essence of the career and the triumphs of the actress who played Dorothy Gale in the Wizard of Oz. Nevertheless, Judy is a movie to discover for all fans of the actress and fans of musicals.
