Our verdict:
A kaiju film in the purest tradition! This is Godzilla vs Kong,Adam Wingard's third installment in the franchise that began in 2014 with Japan's most famous big-screen monster. And that's the film's strength: it's closer to the first kaiju, showing full-frame monster battles in a typical Asian building setting, with its signs, ideograms, destruction and the screams of its terrified population. A film much closer to the original kaiju, therefore, less "Americanized", but more modern and particularly well executed, as much in its well-paced, fluid narrative as in its impeccable photography.
It's a calibrated film, too, which, while respecting the letter of the specifications, allows itself a few liberties in the narrative, which is certainly predictable in structure, but more fluid in its arrangement. We particularly appreciate the film's non-linearity, with several interlocking plots that come together at the very end, giving all the more substance to what has already been told. We also appreciate the little MechaGodzilla twist (yes, you read that right, a Godzilla robot...), not unpredictable, but not necessarily expected either. It's also a return to basics, far removed from the "ecological" message of the first installment, which was nonetheless welcome, refreshing and anchored the franchise in a certain reality, making the viewer think all the more deeply about today's central social issues. None of that here.
It's the kind of grand spectacle we like to see at the movies, with no pretensions either, and which doesn't take itself for what it isn't. And that's one of its other strengths. And that's one of the film's other strengths: it gives viewers what they came to see, namely two monsters fighting mercilessly, destroying everything in their path, without any lyrical flights of fancy or Audiard-style dialogue. That's not the point here, and the viewer gets his money's worth! In short, a must-see in cinemas (without the popcorn, unfortunately...), if programmed.
