Another Palme d'Or for Ruben Östlund. With Sans Filtre (Triangle of Sadness), the Swedish filmmaker does what he does best: depict today's society. Whereas in his previous film, The Square, which won gold at Cannes five years ago, he drew the contours of the contemporary art world, only to explode them, this time Östlund tackles another big issue: the class struggle and, indeed, capitalism. Emetophobic friends, beware: this reversal will be made withhectoliters of vomit and excessive diarrhea, or it won't!
In three acts, Sans Filtre takes a hard, sulphurous look at our troubled society, riddled withinequalities between the ever-richer super-rich and the ever-poorer poor, as well as misunderstandings about Generation Y, fed up with social networks and appearances. We followinfluencer Yaya (Charlbi Dean Kriek) and her helpful Instagram husband and fading model, Carl (Harris Dickinson), as they take part in an all-expenses-paid five-star cruise thanks to her career as a pretty sandwich lady.
The whole thing quickly descends into a grotesque, outrageous farce, peppered with hilarious moments - including a truculent verbal joust over alcohol and theInternational between a disillusioned Marxist American captain played by Woody Harrelson and an inevitably capitalist Russian oligarch who has made his fortune "selling shit" - in reality, chemical fertilizer.
What follows is a series of wildly enjoyable scenes, as glasses clink on tables, foreheads bead with sweat and the storm rages on inside and out - stomachs and intestines can't resist it. But the film runs out of steam and loses its superb quality when it descends into its Koh-Lantaesque game, which undeniably deserved to be shortened, but which nonetheless had the merit of definitively reshuffling the deck and permanently establishing this matriarchal neo-society in which a packet of pretzels crystallizes the protagonists' new social status.
Cynical and funny to the point of nausea, albeit a little uneven, Sans Filtre (Triangle of Sadness) is a Palme d'Or winner that will certainly not win unanimous acclaim, but will leave a lasting impression on minds - and stomachs.
