Our verdict on Amsterdam:

David O. Russel's feature film benefits from the wild ambition of its director. Buoyed by the great success of his previous films, the filmmaker seems to have been given carte blanche to tell the story of this little-known episode in the history of the American interwar period. And although the film is rather long, and would have benefited from more pacing, it's colorful enough to work. Admittedly, there's never any daring, or any thinking outside the box, but it's a decent interwar thriller, where the wounds of the First World War barely have time to heal, before the beginnings of the Second begin to appear.

Despite its impressive cast, none of these brilliant actors manages to pull their weight, and each of them seems to be flatly reciting an over-written text. Platitude is a little too prevalent throughout this work, which promises a touch of madness that never really appears on screen.
