Already an award-winner at Annecy 2022, Nayola won Best Animated Film at this year's Guadalajara Film Festival. Throughout the story, you're immersed in thehistory of Angola, a small Central African country on the shores of the Atlantic Ocean. The country has a strong colonial history: formerly a Portuguese territory, it finally gained independence in 1975. Civil war broke out immediately afterwards. More than 25 years of conflict would ravage the country, its families and mark its history for many years to come.
The story of Nayola takes place between 1995 and 2011, as the civil war comes to an end. The director duo José Miguel Ribeiro and Virgilio Almeida wanted to show the impact of this war and its consequences on civilians, by putting the three protagonists at the center of the scenario. We meet the grandmother, the daughter and the granddaughter who live and evolve in this tense and violent context, even when the war is over.
Angola. Three generations of women in a 25-year civil war: Lelena (the grandmother), Nayola (the daughter) and Yara (the granddaughter). Past and present intertwine. Nayola goes in search of her husband, who disappeared at the worst moment of the war. Decades later, the country is finally at peace, but Nayola has not returned. Yara has now become a rebellious teenager and a subversive rap singer. One night, a masked intruder bursts into their home, armed with a machete. An encounter they could never have imagined...
