François Sentinelle is a daredevil cop by day, and a charming singer by night. This is the explosive new role played by Jonathan Cohen in his new film, Sentinelle, due September 8 on Amazon Prime Video.
And judging by the trailer, we're in for another absurd world, just like his previous TV hit, Le Flambeau. In Sentinelle, Reunion Island's most media-savvy cop, known for an embarrassing success in the music business fifteen years earlier, attempts to revive his career by preparing a new album. At the same time, a wave of violent crime is shaking the island. Except Sentinelle doesn't want to choose between the police and music, and decides to do both. But of course, immersed in his music, Sentinelle isn't really up to investigating, as the crimes continue to escalate.
The cast includes Emmanuelle Bercot, Raphaël Quenard(Yannick), Gustave Kervern and Ramzy Bedia, in a film that is already creating euphoria on social networks.
Our verdict
After the huge success of La Flamme and Le Flambeau, we were eagerly awaiting Jonathan Cohen's new delirium, but we have to admit that Sentinelle doesn't live up to our expectations. Admittedly, it's inventive, often funny and original, but this new feature falls far short of the usual scores by the new darling of French comedy. And even if the pitch is unexpected, viewers familiar with Cohen's previous hits will never be too surprised. It's pure "JoCo", which will amuse fans, but doesn't go much further.
With their star on screen, directors Hugo Benamozig and David Caviglioli seem to be content with the bare minimum, resulting in flat direction and a script that's a pretext for jokes that are a little too easy. Nevertheless, the film is served by an impeccable cast. In addition to Jonathan Cohen, the great revelation of 2023, Raphaël Quenard, is once again tasty, but it's above all Ramzy Bedia's role that impresses us, as he steals the show in every one of his (short) appearances.
