Theaters are about to welcome a stunning fantasy comedy. Dream Scenario, directed by Kristoffer Borgli (renamed for Sick of Myself) and starring Nicolas Cage, arrives in cinemas on December 27, 2023 .
The film tells the story of Paul Matthews, an ordinary teacher played by the legendary Nicolas Cage. His life takes a completely unexpected turn when he finds himself at the center of an extraordinary event: he begins to appear in the dreams of millions of people around the world. Far from going unnoticed, this singular phenomenon propels Paul to worldwide media celebrity status.
This kind of"high concept" film is often a double-edged sword: the genius idea on which the screenplay is based is often not rich enough to hold the viewer's attention throughout the film, and this idea is more suited to a short film than a feature. With Dream Scenario, the small idea is quickly overcome to explore new horizons. Incredible as it may be, the pitch of Mr. Everyone appearing in the dreams of the rest of humanity is merely a pretext for a much deeper discourse. The phenomenon is never explained, and that's not what interests the filmmaker or the viewer.
For Kristoffer Borgli's screenplay is all about what it means to be famous, especially when it's so universal. At first, the film is hilarious, as the character realizes that people's opinions of him are changing, and that more and more of his friends are revealing their strange dreams to him. It feels like a terrific absurdist comedy, and it is, but only in its first half.
Because, yes, Dream Scenario is first and foremost a film about fame, its advantages and, above all, its consequences. From then on, the atmosphere becomes icy, the direction clinical, and the screenplay, like its protagonist, profoundly sad. The turnabout is unexpected, and we shouldn't reveal too much.
