Fashion aficionados beware - after Karl Lagerfeld and Christian Dior, it's now the turn of another legendary couturier to break through to the small screen: Cristóbal Balenciaga. Disney+ is set to resurrect the man behind the famous Balenciaga fashion house, through a tribute series tracing his life and work at the heart of the fascinating world of fashion, to be discovered from January 19, 2024.
The story begins in 1937, when the House of Balenciaga, founded twenty years earlier in Spain in the midst of World War II, arrived in Paris. Led by a talented Spanish team, the "Cristóbal Balenciaga" series highlights the Basque designer's transition to Parisian haute couture, as he adapted his art to the preferences of French customers.
She then takes us to the hustle and bustle of the capital, where the House chose to set up shop on avenue George V. Its innovative style and daring creations, such as the famous "baby doll" dress, caused a sensation in the 50s and 60s. At the time, fashion icons such as Elizabeth Taylor and Grace Kelly were among its most prestigious customers!
Beyond his successes, the series also explores the less prosperous period of the designer's career, marked by the rise of ready-to-wear and competition from big names such as Yves Saint Laurent and Pierre Cardin. Faced with this phenomenon, the couturier bowed out of the Paris scene to return to his hometown of Getaria.
In terms of casting, the title role goes to Madrid actor Alberto San Juan. The others are Anne-Victoire Olivier as Audrey Hepburn, Nine d'Urso as model Colette, Gabrielle Lazure as fashion editor Carmel Snow and Anouk Grinberg as Coco Chanel. The role of Ramón Esparza, Balenciaga's loyal collaborator, goes to Adam Quintero.
With its artists and sublime costumes, the "Cristóbal Balenciaga" series offers us a fascinating epic journey into the world of fashion, through the life and work of this legendary designer. Your next haute couture rendez-vous on the small screen, not to be missed!
