Cannes Festival regularRithy Panh will be making his comeback with Rendez-vous avec Pol Pot, his new film presented at the Cannes 2024 Festival in the Cannes Première section and subsequently released in cinemas on June 5, 2024.
The Franco-Cambodian filmmaker has climbed the Cannes steps many times, starting in 2002 with S21, la machine de mort Khmère rouge (out of competition), then with the documentary Les Artistes du théâtre brûlé (also out of competition), and L'Image manquante in 2013, for which he received the Un Certain Regard prize.
Rendezvous with Pol Pot is based on the book by American journalist Elizabeth Becker, Cambodia's Tears: The Story of a Self-Genocide.
In Cambodia in 1978, three French journalists were invited by the Khmer Rouge to conduct an exclusive interview with the regime's leader, Pol Pot. The country seemed ideal. But behind the Potemkin village, the Khmer Rouge regime is in decline and war with Vietnam threatens to invade the country. The regime searches for culprits, secretly carrying out genocide on a massive scale. Before the journalists' eyes, the beautiful image cracks, revealing the horror. Their journey gradually turns into a nightmare.
The cast of this new feature includes Irène Jacob, Grégoire Colin (one of Claire Denis' favorite actors) and Cyril Gueï.
