The Cannes Film Festival reveals new talent through its Un Certain Regard selection. Hiroshi Okuyama's My Sunshine, a delicate Japanese drama, finds its place there this year.
On the island ofHokkaido, winter is field hockey season for the boys. Takuya, on the other hand, is captivated by Sakura, who has arrived from Tokyo and is practicing figure skating routines. Clumsily imitating Sakura, Takuya touches his coach, who decides to train them as a duo for a competition. Aswinter progresses, harmony grows between them despite their differences. But the first snows melt and spring arrives, unavoidable.
Hiroshi Okuyama, a promising young Japanese director, signs with My Sunshine a delicate drama. The film brings together Sosuke Ikematsu, Keitatsu Koshiyama and Kiara Nakanishi, emerging actors in Japanese cinema, in a touching story of friendship and passion.
Thierry Frémaux declared:"Hiroshi Okuyama is a Japanese filmmaker, a young Japanese generation, it's as if Kore-Eda is coming back as he did 25 years ago with his first films. It's perhaps a young Kore-Eda that we have with Hiroshi Okuyama. His film is called My Sunshine, and it takes place in what is in part an ice-skating milieu".
