Franco-Greek actress Ariane Labed, now also a director, unveils her first feature film, September Says, in Un Certain Regard at the Cannes Film Festival 2024, a selection that highlights young cinema, a cinema of formal research, very universalist, from all over the world.
Having made a name for herself in Athiná-Rachél Tsangári's film Attenberg (for which she received the Volpi Cup for Best Actress from Quentin Tarantino, then president of the 2010 Venice Film Festival jury), Ariane Labed returns for the second time to present a work at the Cannes Festival, following the selection of her short film Olla at the Directors' Fortnight in 2019.
September Says tells the story of two sisters born ten months apart, played by Mia Tharia and Rakhee Thakrar, who move to the countryside with their bipolar mother.
"It's another first film, and another from someone we first knew as an actress, who is proving to be a filmmaker and director full of conviction. An apprenticeship film shot in London, a film of exchanges between two teenage girls and their single mother", declared Thierry Frémaux at the April 11 press conference.
