Sicario, directed by Denis Villeneuve and written by Taylor Sheridan, is a gripping thriller that explores the grim realities of fighting drug trafficking on the U.S.-Mexico border. With an impressive cast including Emily Blunt, Benicio Del Toro and Josh Brolin, this R-rated film, originally released in 2015, returns to Prime Video from August 1, 2024, offering another chance to immerse yourself in this intense and powerful work.
The border between the United States and Mexico has become a veritable no-man's-land. Kate, an idealistic young FBI recruit, is selected to join an elite team led by a mysterious government consultant. Together, they embark on a clandestine operation to combat drug trafficking. Faced with the brutal and often illegal methods of her colleagues, Kate finds her values and morals put to the test. Each mission forces her to question her convictions and fight for survival in a world where violence reigns supreme.
Sicario will appeal to fans of detective and spy films, as well as those who appreciate the suspenseful works of Denis Villeneuve. The director's staging, known for its tense atmospheres and striking images, combines perfectly with a heavy, anxiety-inducing score. Audiences who enjoyed films like Prisoners or No Country for Old Men will find a similar intensity here. The performances of Benicio Del Toro and Emily Blunt add an emotional depth that makes this film a must-see for fans of psychological and action thrillers.
Sicario is a powerful, immersive film, offering a darkly realistic exploration of the fight against drug trafficking on the U.S.-Mexico border. Available on Prime Video from August 1, 2024, it rediscovers Denis Villeneuve's mastery of storytelling and directing. A must-see for all fans of intense thrillers and crime dramas.
Our verdict on Sicario (2015):
Emily Blunt plays Kate, a brave young FBI recruit with good intentions: very American and asexual, she's totally dedicated to her job, which she wants to do well, without any excesses, to nail the big traffickers. But her new mission is peculiar; rather, it's her colleagues who are peculiar, an elite task force led by a madman(Benicio Del Toro) who hunts criminals like animals. In the face of these savage methods, Kate questions and resents. Drawn almost against her will into a bloody manhunt, her anguish mounts until it explodes.
This is the premise of Denis Villeneuve's film, which is renowned for its particularly anxious staging of grandiose, steamy images accompanied by ultra-heavy music. Denis Villeneuve is a master of heavy atmospheres, and we willingly allow ourselves to be led into his despairingly black delirium. But here, a major problem stands in the way: the script is too weak, too linear. There's nothing fundamentally twisted, crazy or insane about it, even though the impeccable direction does everything in its power to make us believe that there is. Sicario is therefore a strange grand écart whose form fascinates far more than its content (PS: the music is worth the detour!).
