The Butte-aux-Cailles swimming pool, located on Place Verlaine in Paris, is a historic site that has retained its 1920s charm. Listed as a Monument Historique, it is an architectural nugget in the neo-Romanesque style designed byarchitect Louis Bonnier. A style of architecture in keeping with the modernist designs of the time. We take you on a tour of this swimming spot nestled in a village district in the heart of the 13th arrondissement.
In terms of facilities, the Butte-aux-Caillles pool has three different pools: an indoor pool, a Nordic pool (the first of its kind in Paris, allowing year-round outdoor swimming in water heated to 28°C) and a 6-metre-long children's pool. Both the indoor pool and the Nordic pool have depths ranging from 0.80 to 2.70 m and widths of 12 m for the former and 12.5 m for the latter. For sunbathers, there's also a solarium where you can bask in the sun!
By the way, thehistory of the Buttes-aux-Cailles swimming pool goes back a long way! Yes, it's one of the oldest swimming pools in Paris still in operation. It was built on the site of the former Butte aux Cailles mill, which in the 19th century supplied water to the district via artesian wells. In 1946, a new hot spring was discovered beneath the pool during renovation work. This spring, which gushes out at a temperature of 28°C, naturally heats the water in the pools, making the Butte aux Cailles pool one of the few in Paris to have this feature.
