Who would have thought that Dirty Dancing would be such a success? No one at first because Eleanor Bergstein, the scriptwriter, has moved heaven and earth for about ten years to find the right taker. What was first thought to be a movie quickly released has finally became a worldwide success.
So okay, it’s kitsch, it’s romantic, it’s cheesy but in the end, we love the whole thing. The story of a so-called bad boy who turns a young and prudish girl into a skilled dancer is far from being boring. 28 after its releasing, the movie is now a musical in Paris. It promises to attract many fans, new or old.
It’s at Paris Palais des Congrès that the show “Dirty Dancing, the classic story on stage” is performed for us. Please note that the musical, launched in Sydney in November 2004 and written by Eleanor Bergstein, the movie scriptwriter, is already critically acclaimed across the globe.
Proof of it, the show, that brings back on the stage the unforgettable love story between Baby and Johnny has been played to a full house for 18 months in Australia and in New Zealand before traveling to Canada, the Netherlands, then to Germany where the show records the most important presale ever in Europe.
Across the Atlantic Ocean, a new record has also been set since the musical is sold out 6 months before the premier and will be performed for 5 years, in front of some 2 billion spectators! In Paris “Dirty Dancing, the classic story on stage” is back for 5 exceptional performances from January 11 to 16, 2018 at the Palais des Congrès.
Don’t miss this show that is staged with the greatest respect for the tradition of music-hall, with dialogs translated for the first time into French but with the songs in English, so be rest assured, if you know the classic movie, you won’t be lost in translation.
You’ll find the magic of the movie: the characters, the dialogs, the cult moments, the sensual dancing scenes and of course the original live music including the famous “Time Of My Life”. The public, mostly made of women, shivers at every cult line. For a quiet show, go on your way, fans are going full throttle.
So yes, when we expect a lot from a cult movie, the result can fail us a bit. We can regret the quite simple décor made of moving boards and the choreographies that may lack a bit of harmony (that being said, it goes with the story), but in the whole, the show is very lively.
After a quite long beginning, the second part excite the audience and the finale convinces everyone. Euphoria takes the whole room! Gaëlle Pauly, “Baby’s” spitting image, perfectly plays her role. Naïve and fresh at the same time, we love her. Benjamin Akl, the story’s Johnny, with very attractive features, make these ladies dream. Even if he’s not as charismatic as Patrick Swayze, he gets by fine.
So, to unplug our brains and spend a lovely evening, the Dirty Dancing musical ins our vote. We advise you to attend it live.
Recalling the story:
Summer 1963, “Baby”, a young lady from a wealthy family, spends monotonous vacations with her parents and sister in a vacation village in Oregon. One night, everything will change when she stumbles across the staff quarters and is mesmerized by the raunchy dance moves and the pounding rhythms.
Baby quickly discovers another, fascinating and exhilarating world. She meets Johnny Castle, a charismatic dance teacher who will chose her as his partner despite they have nothing in common.
Baby’s life will be totally rocked, as Johnny’s…
