About a dozen years ago, celebrity Canadian stager Robert Carsen staged Orpheus and Eurydice (Orfeo Ed Euridice in Italian) for Chicago Opera, Gluck’s opera inspired by Monteverd’s tales and literally reinventing the opera and its stage aesthetic in an era when classicism was the watchword. Staging this masterpiece, Robert Carsen sought to give music and singing a place of choice. This spring, at Paris Théâtre des Champs-Elysées, he takes over his staging (while he is setting up The Beggar’s Opera at the Théâtre des Bouffes du Nord almost at the same time), tightening the plot around the two characters, Orpheus loses his beloved Eurydice.
To interpret these two wonderful roles, these roles that spanned the centuries and the eras, these oh-so incredible singers will be directed by Diego Fasolis, Philippe Jaroussky and Patricia Petibo, who are back together after Handel’s Alcina staged by Katie Mitchell for the Aix-en-Provence Festival, a festival devoted to lyric art.
